Operative since the 1990s, The Rurals (Bristol-based Devonian Andy Compton)
has amassed an enormous catalogue of high-quality deep house, though over
the last two decades the majority of it has only appeared digitally. Hence
Compton's new Classics On Wax series, which offers vinyl debuts for
sought-after gems. Volume one begins with Glenn Underground's typically
warm, loose, jazzy and organic-sounding rework of 'Into Life', before we're
treated to the sunset jazz-fusion/deep house fusion of 'Blessed' (check the
Pat Metheny style guitar solos and vocalisations). Over on side B, vocalist
Magic Soul delivers a 'spoken word' mix of the warm, sax-splashed headiness
of 'It's Hot In Africa', before Compton shares his own 'Soweto Onesteps'
version of 'Chillin' In The Ghetto' - his jazzy and sun-baked tribute to
South African deep house culture.
